Track Bolt

A track bolt is a type of railway fastener with a threaded surface. It is used to secure the railway track to the railway sleeper. A track bolt consists of three parts, including a threaded bolt, a lug or nut, and a locking washer. The washers of the track bolts prevent displacement and loosening and solve the occurrence of violent vibration.

Types of track bolt

Track bolts come in different sizes and shapes, each designed for a specific purpose. The right track bolt must be used, it prevent any safety risks.

T bolt

Advantages:
1. T bolts provide a robust connection between two surfaces, which is less likely to loosen or vibrate out over time.
2. T bolts can often be tightened without tools.
3. Their unique design eliminates the need for washers or lock nuts, which can reduce assembly costs.

Disadvantages:
1. T bolts can be more expensive than traditional fasteners due to their complex design and high-quality materials.

Hexagon track bolt

Hexagon bolt

Advantages:
1. Hexagon bolts can withstand high levels of torque without slipping.
2. Compared to other types of bolts, hexagon bolts are more economical due to their simple structure.

Disadvantages:
1. In tight spaces, Hexagon bolts might make it difficult to fit a tool around the head of the bolt to tighten or loosen it.
2. If not treated or coated properly, hexagon bolts can be susceptible to corrosion, which can weaken their integrity over time.
3. Repeated use can lead to wear and tear, especially if the bolt is not properly lubricated or if it is over-tightened.

Square head track bolt

Advantage:
1. Square head bolts have a high strength-to-weight ratio and can withstand heavy loads and high levels of stress.
2. Square head bolts are easy to install and can be tightened quickly with a wrench.

Disadvantages.
1. square-head bolts is that they can become loose, corrode and weaken over time.

Fish bolt

Fish bolt

Advantages:
1. Fish bolts provide a strong connection to railway fish plates due to their large size and deep threads.
2. The design of fish bolt heads helps to seal out moisture, offering superior weather resistance compared to regular screws.
3. Fish bolts offer greater holding power, especially in applications exposed to vibrations or movement.

Disadvantages:
1. Fish bolts can be prone to corrosion, which may weaken the bolt and lead to failure over time.
2. While their unique design is beneficial for certain applications, it may not be suitable for all projects

Tunnel Bolt

Tunnel bolt

Advantages:
1. Tunnel bolts protect the infrastructure from weather effects like snow and rain, reducing maintenance costs.

Disadvantages:
1. The initial cost of tunnel construction is higher.

Double head track bolt

Double head track bolt

Advantages:
1. With threads at both ends, Double head track bolts can be screwed in from either side.
2. Double head track bolts are reusable and can save time and money.

Disadvantages:
1. The threads at each end reduce the cross-sectional area, which decreases the overall strength of the bolt.

Process of track bolt

  1. Raw Materials preparation: The raw materials used for rail bolts are usually steel used to meet the required standards for strength and durability.
  2. Heating and Forging: The steel is heated to a specific temperature and then forged into the desired shape using specialized equipment. This makes the rail bolt strong and durable.
  3. Finishing and Inspection: The rail bolt cools in a controlled manner to achieve the desired hardness and strength. The rail bolt is inspected for any defects that may affect its performance. Defective products are thrown away and the rest are delivered to customers.

Track bolt installation

Rail bolt installation is a crucial step. The correct installation of track bolts is essential to ensure the safety and reliability of the track. Proper installation can prevent bolt failure, reduce maintenance costs, and extend the service life of the track.

  1. Drilling Holes: Drill a hole into the end of the handrail and another into the fitting. Drill the hole to the correct diameter and depth to ensure that the bolt is secure and fits tightly in the hole.
  2. Inserting The Rail Bolt: Apply a thin coat of wood glue to the end of the handrail. Insert the rail bolt into the handrail and then screw it into the fitting.
  3. Tightening The Bolt: Use a wrench or a specialized rail bolt wrench to tighten the bolt, securing the handrail to the fitting.
  4. Finishing Touches: Once the bolt is tightened, you need to cover the hole with a wood plug or cap.
  5. Regular Inspection: After installation, check bolts regularly for signs of wear or damage. Any bolts showing signs of corrosion or wear should be replaced immediately to prevent safety hazards.
